For the past few years we have raised funds every August for the East Africa Character Development Trust, a charity established by members of our longstanding friends and Cricket Week visitors, the Kenya Kongonis, to support disadvantaged children in the slum communities of Nairobi, using cricket as a delivery vehicle for character education. This year the need is particularly acute as the impact of Covid-19 in Kenya has been dire.
Following last week's match (see the 2020 Cricket Week post), Kongonis' UK Chairman, Phil Davy, gave a short presentation at the club about how the EACDT has responded to the crisis, with their coaches in Nairobi supporting various community programmes, and in particular developing a food packages programme for some of the most desperate families they work with. More information about this, and about the EACDT's work generally, is contained in their August newsletter: see https://eacdt.org/wp-content/uploads/2020/08/eacdt-august-2020.pdf.
Donations are still badly needed to keep the programme going. An informal fundraiser for the EACDT on the evening of the match last week raised almost £500 (particular thanks to Alan Stone for donating his umpiring fees for the week). However, Blackheath members who were not there and would like to contribute can still do so by making online transfers to the EACDT's UK bank account: Account Name: East Africa Character Development Trust, Account No: 10392588, Sort Code: 20-84-20.
Every donation will be much appreciated.
