After several postponements due to lockdown restrictions, we're delighted to confirm that the formal opening ceremony for the newly refurbished Grafham pavilion, the home of our flourishing women & girls' section, will finally be taking place on Sunday 25 July.
The day will start with simultaneous U9 and U11 girls' mini-tournaments beginning at 10am, before the ceremony itself between 12.30 and 1pm. After Club President Peter Herbert has cut the ribbon, there will be a sit-down lunch for invited guests in a marquee and a BBQ for everyone else. There will also be an outside bar running throughout the day from 12 noon onwards.
The afternoon will see the first ever Hundred match played by any Blackheath team, a contest between the Blackheath Women and a Blackheath U18 Girls team. The match will be played for the magnificent trophy pictured opposite, kindly donated by Culinary Concepts (courtesy of James Denton, dad to one of our juniors). The trophy not only reflects the Blackheath stag logo, but is ideally suited to keeping cold several bottles of Prosecco for after the match!
The refurbishment of the ground and pavilion has involved a colossal effort from a large number of members, as well as major financial contributions from the London Marathon Charitable Trust, Sport England and Surrey Cricket. The opening ceremony is a chance to say thank you to all of them, as well as for everyone finally to have a proper look at the pavilion which (thanks to the lifting of restrictions) can be fully open for the first time. There will also be an exhibition of photographs showing the development of the works to the ground and pavilion since 2019.
All members are warmly invited to come along for what should be a memorable day. Further information on logistics (including parking arrangements) will be circulated nearer the time. The full programme of events, with approximate timings, is set out below.
